Diwali celebrations as seen from a rooftop in New Delhi, India

This photo was taken from a rooftop in New Delhi, India during the Diwali festival in 2011. Diwali, meaning ‘festival of lights’ is a celebration in the Hindu calendar where families and neighbours celebrate together, by decorating their homes, lighting candles, sharing food and setting off lots of fireworks.

The fireworks are supposed to drive away evil spirits, while the house is cleaned rigorously before the festival and candles are lit to welcome the goddess Lakshmi.

My experience of the Diwali celebrations in New Delhi was wonderful, with fireworks going off all over the city for hours on end, beautiful decorations in the house I was staying at, with candles, marigold flower garlands and small shrines created to celebrate the day.

Happy Diwali to everyone celebrating the day!
