Road-trips are almost a rite of passage and something you should definitely experience in your life. Whether it’s through your own country, or you travel to the other side of the world to experience the best road trips this planet has to offer, there’s no doubt that you’ll have the time of your life. Just grab some friends, rent a local car and hit the great open road!

So with January inspiring me to think about what I would like to achieve within the next year and more, and my itchy feet started to get out of control, I started thinking about dream road-trips I would love to take within the next few years.

Here are my top 5 bucket list road trips:

1. Australia’s Great Ocean Road

Australia is a beautiful country, and the Great Ocean Road on the southeastern coast between Torquay and Allansford is perhaps one of the most beautiful coastal drives in the world. The 243 kilometre stretch of road takes you along turquoise blue ocean, steep rugged cliffs and unique limestone sea stacks, known as the Twelve Apostles. The road is also a war memorial to the soldiers who fought in World War I. What better place for me to practice surfing again, than Australia’s ‘Surf Coast’!

2. Route 66, USA

Although no longer in existence, the old Route 66 is a classic road-trip route; the source of countless ‘coming-of-age’ movies, songs and legendary times. From Chicago, Illinois to Santa Monica, Los Angeles, you can still follow the old route using the modern Interstate Highway System. Passing through the American Midwest, the Great Plains and the Southwest, Route 66 represents the great open road, freedom, adventure and the vastness of the country. Who doesn’t dream about hitting the iconic Route 66 in an ‘68 Ford Mustang Convertible, with the wind in your hair and best friends by your side? 😀

4. Basque Circuit, Spain

I’ve always been fascinated with Spain and I love the gorgeous countryside. While I don’t know if my teenage dream of living in Barcelona will ever come true, I do know I will definitely take a road trip through the country some day. Since I’ve only ever been to the south of the country, I would love to visit the Basque Country in the north for my next visit. The Basque Circuit is an iconic route in Spain, taking you through Bilbao, Pamplona, the gorgeous Pyrenees mountains and back towards the east coast. To allow for more time to see the sights and sample the great food, I’d probably rent a car and take in Spain’s Basque Country at my own pace.

5. South Island Circuit, New Zealand

My list of must-see places continues with New Zealand. This part of the world has been on my list since I first laid eyes on it on the silver screen, through native Peter Jackson’s masterpiece The Lord of the Rings. Since then, I have been obsessed with visiting New Zealand, and mainly Hobbiton. The soaring, snow-capped mountains, idyllic lakes and beautiful valleys are some of the most stunning I have ever seen…even if it was only in pictures and on-screen so far. Now that one of my best friends lives there, I hope to have the opportunity to visit in the next few years.

5. Pan-American Highway

There’s no greater, or longer driving route in the world; the epic trip from A-A, the Antarctic to the Arctic, or Alaska to Argentina. The Pan-American Highway is only broken at one spot, the Darién Gap in Panama, where the rainforest is too thick (and dangerous) to cross. From the snowy conditions on either end of the journey, through the hot Equator, across mountains, into deserts and more, the Pan-American Highway is the ultimate road-trip for experiencing the diversity of the planet.
